Excitement engulfs Cavendish University Uganda’s 11th Graduation as 1,077 Students Graduate



CUU congratulates the Class of 2022 upon defying all odds and emerging victorious at its 11th Graduation. The Graduation ceremony which was held on 25th August 2022 at Speke Resort Munyonyo was presided over by H.E. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chancellor of Cavendish University Uganda (CUU).

In his speech, the Chancellor, applauded the graduands for their resilience and commitment to succeed. He recognised the University leadership for their efforts geared towards surpassing their pre-pandemic performance at a time when many other Universities are still struggling to recover from the effects of Covid-19. He also called for scholarships for talented African youths who are disadvantaged by low incomes.

Under the theme, “Universities Through Covid-19: Strategies for Recovering and Surpassing Pre-Pandemic Performance”, the Commencement Speaker, Prof. Noah Midamba who is the former Vice Chancellor of KCA University in Nairobi Kenya, highlighted major issues facing higher education beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

The distinguished Professor of Defense and Foreign Policy encouraged graduands to pursue their own dreams, listen to their own hearts and to create their own journeys. “Choose what you must do and embark on it right now.” Prof. Midamba advised.

At the event, the Principal Judge of the High Court of Uganda, Honourable Justice Dr Flavian Zeija officiated as the day’s Guest of Honour and in his remarks, Justice Flavian Zeija congratulated the graduands on using their time and parents’ resources very well, and urged them to use the skills and knowledge they have acquired to positively change their communities.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Francis Mugisha reminded graduands that it is their duty as a generation to shape the world. “We have equipped you with the required knowledge, skills and competencies and exposed you to a rigorous academic process; with those, I am very confident that you will confront this world with confidence and optimism,” he said.

The Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Olubayi Olubayi urged graduands to “move away from memorization to active learning, passionate problem-solving, and agile innovation.”

The event attracted many dignitaries from Uganda, Nigeria and other parts of Africa, prominent among whom were; Prof. Mary Okwakol, the Executive Director of NCHE, Mr. Frank Nigel Othembi, the Director, Law Development Centre, Prof. Paul Mugambi, Executive Director of Uganda Vice Chancellors’ Forum, Vice Chancellors, Members of Parliament, among others.

Cavendish University Advisory Council members in attendance included; Lady Justice Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza, Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda, Dr. Sam Orochi Orach, Executive Secretary, Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau, Hajjat Aisha Lubega, Deputy Chairperson, Electoral Commission and Mr. David Rusa, Former Director of Special Duties, Office of the President.

CUU also launched two academic journals at the event. These included; the Cavendish University Journal of Social Sciences and Management which was launched by the Commencement Speaker, Prof. Noah Midamba and the Cavendish University Law Journal which was launched by the Director of Law Development Centre, Mr. Frank Nigel Othembi.

1,077 students were awarded Certificates & Diplomas and conferred with Degrees at the 11th Graduation Ceremony and the best students per faculty were recognised and awarded by respective industry partners.
