2nd Benjamin Mkapa Memorial Lecture



Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) held the second Annual Benjamin Mkapa Memorial Lecture on November 29, 2023, to honour the legacy of the former Chancellor, His Excellency Benjamin Mkapa. The event centered around the theme of Diplomacy and Contemporary State Formation in Africa – focusing on the pivotal role Benjamin Mkapa played in the Moshi Conference of 1979.

CUU was honoured to host distinguished speakers at the event, including:

  • Her Excellency, Mama Anna Mkapa, the wife of the late H.E. Benjamin Mkapa
  • His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan, Chancellor & Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
  • Guest of Honour, Professor Tarsis Kabwegyere, the Former Minister of General Duties, Office of the Prime Minister of Uganda
  • Keynote Speaker, Ambassador Dr. Aziz Ponary Mlima, the Former Tanzania High Commissioner to Uganda & Personal Assistant of H.E. Benjamin Mkapa, and;
  • Special Guest, Hon. Col. (Rtd) Amanya Mushega, Chairman of the Education Policy Review Commission

Panellists included:

  • Prof. Mwambutsya Ndebesa, a Lecturer at Makerere University and Political Media Analyst
  • Mr. David Rusa, Lecturer in International Relations and Security Studies at Cavendish University Uganda
  • Lt. Col. Ronald Rubaale Adyeri, Coordinator of Microfinance under Operation Wealth Creation, Ministry of Finance and Economic Development

The panel discussion was expertly moderated by Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye, Spokesperson of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF).

H.E. Benjamin Mkapa was appointed as the University’s Chancellor on December 5, 2014, in a ceremony presided over by the then Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera. He served as Chancellor for six (6) years before his passing on July 24, 2020.
