The Master of Science in Project Management (MPM) is a specialised two year taught master’s programme. The programme is designed to provide the knowledge, skills, competencies for effective project management for business and socio-economic transformation based on criteria provided by industry and development partners. This highly competitive and intellectually challenging programme is for those seeking to enhance their skills and professional development in the context of Business and Management. The programme will equip students to effectively engage with an increasingly dynamic and competitive global environment.

In view of the logistical complexity and technical requirements of today’s projects, the demand for skilled project managers cannot be underestimated. In fact, many top executives are seeking advanced skills in project management to gain a competitive advantage. The Master of Science in Project Management is a unique opportunity to combine a broad knowledge of business and management principles with a specific knowledge of effective project-based strategies.

Candidates with an undergraduate degree from any discipline (with no prior experience in project Management) may apply. The Master of Science in Project Management seeks to develop students into Project Management leaders ready to tackle the challenges of today’s development projects in global environment. To this end the programme aims to:

  • To provide students with the background and skills in project management so that they can understand the basics needed to begin to work as a project manager.
  • To expose students to some of the key socio-economic issues and challenges in the project management.
  • To provide a service learning opportunity so that students can get direct experience interacting with a local profit and non -profit organisation that works either internationally or domestically on socio-economic issues.
  • Understanding that project management means and how it improves the success of information technology projects.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of project management terms and techniques, such as; triple constraint of project management, project management knowledgeable areas and process groups, project life cycle and tools of project management.
  • To use Microsoft project and other office productivity software to help plan and manage a project.
  • To appreciate the importance of good project management.

The programme is designed to build on the broad foundation of knowledge and experience of students. The programme is designed to blend theory and practical skills to enable students effectively apply the knowledge they acquire in day to day business management. In particular, the MPM is designed:

  • To provide an advanced study to the students with the background and skills in project management so that they can understand the basics needed to begin to work as a project manager and manage projects effectively.
  • To provide opportunity for career development of management skills and knowledge at professional and senior management level.
  • To develop the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of business and Project management.
  • To improve business and project management practice in innovative ways to provide an opportunity for the enhancement of learning skills and personal development to work in a self-directed way to make a contribution to the organisation and wider business community stakeholders.

The programme is designed to:

  • Be a modular with a three taught semesters for full time students (and a five taught semesters for part time students) followed by a dissertation in the fourth semester for full time and fifth semester for part-time.
  • Provide for a final award of the Master of Science Project Management for completing all stages of the MPM Programme and the Dissertation.
  • Provide an interim award of the Cavendish Post Graduate Certificate in Project Management (CPM) for the successful completion of the five Course names in Stage 1 of the programme, and an interim award of the Cavendish Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management (PGD PM) for successful completion of the ten Course names (excluding the Dissertation) in Stage 2 of the programme.
  • Provide an integrated system of Course names that will progressively develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills outlined in the section on aims and learning outcomes.
  • Provide a framework for assessment that represents a fair workload for students whilst being appropriate to the requirements of an MPM degree.
