CUU Vice Chancellor captivates Rotarians

The fellowship of Wednesday 18th September, 2019 at the Rotary Club of Lugogo Mango-Tree was uniquely set with the distinguished Guest Speaker for the evening chosen as Prof. John F. Mugisha, the Vice Chancellor of Cavendish University Uganda (CUU).

Prof Mugisha did a prodigious job of breaking down for the audience strategies for “Enhancing the effectiveness of basic Education.” Prof. Mugisha prefaced his discussion with a thought provoking quote from Mark Twain, “The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read,” which sparked off attentive listening and a lively engagement for the remainder of his presentation.

The CUU Vice Chancellor further emphasized that Universities need to focus on assessment for learning as opposed to assessment of learning which encourages cramming.

The discussion later evolved from the need for student-centricity, to sharing his teaching experience in that line while at the University of Padova in Italy, and Queen Margaret University in England, where he taught as a visiting lecturer.

“The overall take home from my experience was that institutions of learning need to embrace dynamism and focus on packaging interventions as opposed to just imparting knowledge to their students,” he concluded.

The club members appreciated his presentation and admitted to being beneficiaries of a very enlightening discussion that provided answers to questions that had bothered them for long.
