The Executive Director of Cavendish University Uganda (CUU), Mr. David Mutabanura, was invited to join other top University leaders from East African institutions to draw a roadmap for operating and driving impact through the Education Collaborative’s first Regional Hub.
The Education Collaborative is a network of like-minded higher education institutions in Africa who believe in collaborating to advance higher education.
The two-day event which took place from 24th – 25th August 2021 saw University leaders from 8 East African institutions convene at Rongo University in Kenya. Starting from East Africa, the Education Collaborative looks to scale impact across the continent through a regional hub approach that works through clusters of exemplary African universities.
The University leaders in attendance included; Mr. David Mutabanura, Executive Director, Cavendish University Uganda; Mr. Paul Swaga, President, Davis College, Rwanda; Prof. Robert Gateru, Vice-Chancellor, Riara University, Kenya; Mr. Eric Saulo, Director, Advancement and External Relations, Strathmore University, Kenya; Prof. Samuel Gudu, Vice-Chancellor, Rongo University, Kenya; Prof. Daniel Mugendi, Vice-Chancellor, University of Embu, Kenya; Dr. Bonn Jonyo, Principal Research Officer, United States International University – Africa (USIU), Kenya; Prof. Baylie Yeshita, Vice-Chancellor, Kepler, Rwanda; Mr. Araba Botchway, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, Ashesi University; Ghana, and Ms. Rose Dodd, Director, Education Collaborative.
“At Cavendish University, we are very delighted to be the first out of nearly 50 Universities in Uganda to be invited to join the East African Education Collaborative Hub,” stated Mr. David Mutabanura, the Executive Director, Cavendish University. ” The hub speaks to innovation, which is one of the central pillars of our vision and provides an opportunity to engage with universities of similar minds in terms of being student-centred. We have been operating as competitors but the hub is unique in fostering the power in numbers, compounding resources and availing opportunities for learning.”
“Several higher education institutions in the East Africa region are open to innovation, and have shown exemplar models, making the region an excellent starting point for hub development,” remarked Ms. Rose Dodd, Director of the Education Collaborative. ” With this approach, institutions can customize best practices learned from peer institutions across Africa to suit their unique contexts.”
“Often, most African universities look beyond the continent for model universities to learn from,” shared Ms. Dodd. ” The Education Collaborative is focused on identifying and working with committed African institutions ready to improve our collective excellence.”
Over the next ten years, the institutions within established regional hubs will build the capacity to drive transformation in ethics and leadership, career readiness, entrepreneurship ecosystem, among others and each regional hub will have an office situated in a selected institution where the Collaborative can coordinate all activities within the region.
