The Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) Awards Giving Ceremony held on Wednesday 13th November, 2019 was the first of its kind. 27 students who have stood out, excelled and represented CUU on national, regional and international fronts were recognised for their sterling performance.
The aforementioned students were awarded Certificates of Excellence by members of the University Advisory Council, the Vice Chancellor and other members of Senior Management. It was a colourful and well attended event that bore witness to very cheerful awardees that inspired congratulatory wishes from lecturers and fellow students.
Early this year, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. John F. Mugisha declared that 2019 is a “Year of Excellence” and challenged all members of staff and students to commit to continued growth, self-improvement and to stay focused on achieving set goals in an excellent manner regardless of the setbacks. “Excellence is not fashionable sloganeering but a culture in action,” he further emphasized during the CUU 8th Graduation Ceremony held on 29th March, 2019. The Awards were therefore a true reflection that the awardees took the Vice Chancellor’s words to heart.
University Advisory Council members in attendance included; Mr. Francis Onapito Ekomoloit, the Legal & Corporate Affairs Director, Nile Breweries Ltd, and Mr. David Rusa, the Director, Special Duties, Office of the President, who also doubles as an Alumnus.
The event was crowned with an insightful and enlightening public lecture facilitated by Prof Olubayi Olubayi, the Chair of the CUU University Council about “The Impact of Growth Mindsets versus Fixed Mindsets on Teaching and Learning”
In his delivery, Prof Olubayi encouraged attendees to develop a mindset of endurance and urged lecturers to focus the first 10 minutes of class on enriching the mindsets of their students as opposed to immediate execution of academic content. Amidst his discussion, the Professor on multiple occasions made reference to Anders Ericsson’s book, “Peak,” which spells out unique practices for great achievers and recommended the audience to read the book. He concluded the session by challenging all participants to work towards propelling CUU into an Institution that produces creation.
