Cavendish University Uganda Joins 2022 FAWE Run to Support Girl Child Education

CUU graced the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) charity run which was held in commemoration of the forum’s Silver Jubilee on 09th April 2022.

The 5 and 10 Km races kicked off a fundraising campaign to raise 4 billion shillings to send over 2000 vulnerable girls back to school. Hundreds converged at Kitante Primary School where the run was launched to join the cause.

Margaret Blick Kigozi, a Ugandan medical doctor and consultant at the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation was the chief runner at the event themed “Give Her a Chance.”

“I found it relevant to participate in this run organised by FAWE because girl child education is very pertinent. Most girls are vulnerable and therefore need to be given special consideration towards education” the chief runner, commonly known as Maggie Kigozi remarked.

Susan Opok Tumusiime, the Executive Director, FAWE Uganda Chapter expounded that, “The FAWE run was dedicated towards breaking barriers to girls’ bright future through education to enhance their development.”

Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) was represented by the Outreach Manager, Ms. Francisca Tebitendwa, the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Dr. Alone Kimwise, among other staff and students.

Notable runners at the event included; Prof Mary Okwakol, the Executive Director, NCHE, Miria Matembe, former member of the Pan-African Parliament from Uganda, and other representatives from FAWE and various NGOs.

FAWE is a Pan-African Non-Government Organisation (NGO) founded in 1992 by five women ministers of education to promote girls’ and women’s education in Africa. FAWE Uganda was established in 1997 with the goal of accelerating female participation in education and closing the gender gap within the education system at all levels in Uganda.
