1.1Programme description

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a generalist taught master’s qualification in Business that develops the skills, competencies and knowledge indicated by industry as necessary for successful strategic business management within a global economy.

Candidates with an undergraduate degree from any discipline (with no prior experience in Business) may apply. Recent industry feedback has indicated that there is a strong market demand for graduates with business acumen built on a broader base of skill sets, which could include anything from the arts, education, science, law and various other disciplines.

These unique combinations of skills develop highly innovative and dynamic business leaders who gain traction across a wide variety of industries. The MBA will guide the student through a transitional understanding of business management structures and commercial practices, providing the foundations for the ability to understand, respond, challenge, and lead change. The qualification exposes students to intellectual breadth across a large number of organizational functions, aimed at creating diverse, market relevant, and highly skilled managers who will make an innovative impact on business at a local and global level.

The MBA has been designed to:

  • Be a modular scheme, with a three semester taught programme of study for full time students and a five semester taught programme of study for part time students, following which a dissertation must be completed for the award of Masters in Business Administration (MBA.) over a three months period.
  • Provide for a final award of the Masters in Business Administration for completing all stages of the MBA Programme and the Dissertation.
  • Provide an interim award of the Cavendish Post Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (CBA) for the successful completion of the five modules in Stage 1 of the programme, and an interim award of the Cavendish Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDMS) for successful completion of the ten modules (excluding the Dissertation) in Stage 2 of the programme.
  • Provide an integrated system of modules that will progressively develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills outlined in the section on aims and learning outcomes.
  • Provide a framework for assessment that represents a fair workload for students whilst being appropriate to the requirements of an MBA degree.

2.0 Programme objectives

The MBA seeks to develop students into leaders ready to tackle the challenges of today's global business environment. This is accomplished through the following learning goals and objectives:

  • To Integrate experience and experiential learning
  • To analyse social, legal and ethical responsibilities of organizations and society of global business practice.
  • To demonstrate ability of employing effective cross cultural communication and commonalities of global environment on business
  • To develop Strategic and innovative thinking skills to enable effective decision-making and problem solving
  • To integrate functional business knowledge of marketing, operations, information technology, finance, accounting, statistics and quantitative analysis

3.0 Learning Outcomes

A student on the MBA programme will:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the organisational and management processes that underlie in the business environments.
  • Have the necessary knowledge and skills in the development and management of business in global environment, technology application in business to successfully (re)enter the workplace in a management or consulting role.
  • Develop the analytical understanding of the standards, legal, policy and regulatory issues in business and information technology.
  • Be able to respond to the organisation and management of current and emerging technologies.
  • Develop conceptual and practical knowledge in the following areas: managing change; knowledge management; managing resources; systems analysis and design; IT strategy; problem-solving methodologies; project management; E-business.
