CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY ORIENTATION (FIRST YEAR STUDENTS)



Theme: “Support First-Year Students to Prepare for their Careers and Employability”

Introduction

The goal of this New Student Careers and Employability Orientation is to enable students to adjust to university lifestyle, maximise their time and learning environment effectively, and build a positive attitude, to get intrinsically motivated towards learning new things and to plan for purpose-filled lives during and after university. The sessions will guide students to find their purpose, develop and apply effective study habits, and explore their careers and employability options, and above all, discover which learning styles and study skills are appropriate for their time and programme at Cavendish University Uganda.

Goals and Objectives

The main objective of the C&EO is to introduce the first year students to the services of the careers and employability office. It will also introduce the students to the university lifestyle, talk about careers and employability options, and assist students to reflect on their ambitions.

Specific Objective

  1. Acquaint new students with the mission, programs and services of the careers and employability services
  2. Provide strategies and support to ensure that graduates are employable
  3. Introduce students to university life, and enhance alumni and student relations/interactions
  4. Strengthen student’s ability to identify and set priorities for an effective and lifelong careers and employability plan
  5. Learn how Cavendish University Uganda can support students on their different careers and employability paths.

Outcome

The participants will:

  1. Know what they want to do and be by the end of the orientation
  2. Acquire strategies and support to ensure that graduates are employable which is a major priority for universities
  3. Be introduced to careers and employability services and programmes vital to their successful transition to the world of work
  4. Be exposed to the key available services and opportunities to enable students make well-informed choices and decisions

Methodology

The session will begin with a discussion forum with select Alumni to reflect what they should have known before joining university. This would set the tone and inspiration at the onset of the orientation. Then it will be followed by speeches from hosts, and presentation from invited guests.
