Cavendish University Uganda is pleased to announce the appointment of H.E. Dr Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan as the 03rd Chancellor of our University effective April 27, 2021.
H.E. Dr Goodluck Jonathan who replaces H.E. Benjamin Mkapa (former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, 2nd Chancellor) and H.E. Dr Kenneth Kaunda (former President of the Republic of Zambia, 01st Chancellor) is expected to be installed on August 26, 2021 in time to preside over the conferment of Degrees and award of Diplomas and Certificates at the University’s 10th Graduation Ceremony that will take place at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort on the same date.
The Chancellor as the titular head of the university will, among others, perform the duties of constituting and presiding over all major university ceremonies, especially graduation, promote the image of the University, and provide the university with knowledge and strategic thinking in enhancing the provision of high quality education.
His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan is a distinguished scholar who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, a Master’s degree in Hydrobiology and Fisheries Biology; and a PhD in Zoology from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He began his early career as an Environmental Protection Officer, before becoming a Lecturer, and later an Education Inspector. In 1999 his political career kicked off that saw him become Deputy Governor, then Governor of Bayelsa State in 2005. In 2007 he became the 12th Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in 2010 became the 14th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The new Chancellor was appointed following a rigorous search among eminent African leaders distinguished for their ingenuity and commitment to the promotion of Education and Social Development in Africa, and following the recommendation of the University's Advisory Council.
As a strong believer in quality education, he is quoted saying, "If we do not spend billions educating our youth today, we will spend it fighting insecurity tomorrow. And you do not have to spend on education just because of insecurity. It is also the prudent thing to do."
The entire fraternity of Cavendish University Uganda is very pleased and honoured to welcome Chancellor H.E. Dr Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan in his new position, following in the footsteps of other distinguished African leaders that have occupied the same position before him.
We look forward to his leadership in propelling the university in the achievement of its new mission of transforming and inspiring students to reach their full potential in employment, entrepreneurship and ethical leadership.
