Former President of Nigeria, H.E. Goodluck Jonathan Installed as Cavendish University Uganda’s Chancellor



H.E. Dr Goodluck Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was on Thursday, 26th August 2021, installed as the 3rd Chancellor of Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) during the University’s 10th Graduation ceremony.

The Virtual & Scientific (Blended) Graduation was held at the Commonwealth, Speke Resort, Munyono under the theme, “Technology-enabled Learning, Innovation and Growth.”

The highly organised and colourful ceremony that saw over 600 students conferred with degrees, diplomas and certificates was officiated by the Minister of State for Higher Education, Hon. John C. Muyingo as the Guest of Honour, while Dr. Ham-Mukasa Mulira, former Minister of ICT was the day’s Commencement Speaker.

The Chancellor, His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan was installed by Bishop, The Rt. Rev Dr Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa, the Chancellor of Bishop Stuart University. Hon. Justice Mike Chibita, Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda administered the oaths, Prof. Olubayi Olubayi, the Chairman of the University Council introduced the Chancellor, while Ms. Pheona Wall, the President of the Uganda Law Society and Master of Laws student at Cavendish University presented the Chancellor’s profile.

In his speech, H.E. Goodluck Jonathan acknowledged that the position of the Chancellor was new to him and he expressed how delighted he felt to have been honoured with this special position, where he has to not only directly participate in the university’s major events but also be part of its growth and development journey.

His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan inherits a seat formerly occupied by two past Presidents, H.E. Benjamin Mkapa (former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, 2nd Chancellor), and H.E. Kenneth Kaunda (former President of the Republic of Zambia, 01st Chancellor). “I want to specially appreciate the university sponsors and University Council for nominating me to work as Chancellor, following in the footsteps of two very eminent sons of Africa.” He articulated.

The newly installed Chancellor urged universities to equip students with comparative socio-economic analytical tools to enable them to contribute meaningfully to the solutions of problems that afflict their communities locally, nationally and internationally.

The ceremony was graced by special dignitaries from Nigeria who accompanied His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan to bear witness of his Investiture, and among whom were, Dame Patience Jonathan (Wife to H.E. Goodluck Jonathan), Turner Amalate Johnnie (HRH King Obigbo Mikimiki 1, Obanema Of Opume), Eruani Azibapu Godbless (Group President, Azikel Group of company), among other invited guests.

The event was widely celebrated by graduands who were following virtually from different parts of the world.
