On March 4th, 2025, Cavendish University Uganda celebrated a remarkable achievement as 20 postgraduate students and early career researchers successfully completed a fellowship programme under the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). The training, titled “Enhancing Personal Research Effectiveness through Writing Communities and Skillful Publications,” was designed to strengthen research skills and promote scholarly publications among academics. Supported by the CODESRIA African Diaspora Support to African Universities Programme, the fellowship ran from January 31st to March 4th, 2025.
The fellowship was a collaborative initiative involving Cavendish University Uganda (CUU), the University of Victoria in Canada, and the University of Lincoln in the UK. It was led by Prof. Doris Kakuru (University of Victoria), alongside Dr. Loice Atukunda (University of Lincoln) and Prof. Martha Kibukamusoke (Cavendish University). This partnership reflects CUU’s commitment to fostering global collaboration and advancing research capacity, particularly in the social sciences.
Participants were awarded certificates of completion, recognising their dedication to improving their research effectiveness. The programme emphasized creating writing communities and enhancing publication skills—key elements that are expected to leave a lasting impact on CUU’s research culture. By nurturing these communities, Cavendish University aims to empower scholars to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s development and global knowledge creation.
Cavendish University Uganda is committed to ensuring the sustainability of this initiative. The university plans to foster ongoing writing communities, manage scalability, and oversee the formation of writing groups among postgraduate students and staff. These efforts align with CUU’s broader effort of equipping researchers with skills that address Africa’s multifaceted challenges while contributing to global academic discourse.
This milestone underscores CUU’s dedication to research development and its partnership with CODESRIA and international institutions. The fellowship aligns with CODESRIA’s vision of advancing African futures through impactful research initiatives that respond to societal challenges.
The successful completion of this programme marks a significant step forward in equipping scholars with the tools needed to transform research in Africa and beyond. It also highlights CUU’s role as a leader in fostering meaningful academic collaboration across continents.
