
Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) recently hosted an exciting and thought-provoking event, AI Night, bringing together students, faculty, industry experts, and alumni to explore the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Uganda. The event showcased CUU’s commitment to driving innovation, ethical practices, and inclusive growth in the digital economy.
The evening was kicked off with AI Games Interludes led by CUU students and staff, followed by welcoming remarks and a powerful presentation from Dr Yusuf Katono, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management, on Cavendish University’s vision for AI: Driving Innovation, Ethical Practice, and Inclusive Growth, highlighting the university’s efforts to integrate AI into education, research, and industry partnerships while emphasizing ethical practices and inclusive opportunities.
The keynote address by Joshua Okello, the Senior Director, Global Service Delivery at Samasource Uganda, focused on scaling ethical AI operations in Uganda and building a skilled workforce for the digital economy. He stressed the importance of preparing Uganda’s youth for the emerging AI-driven job market and the role of ethical frameworks in guiding AI implementation.

A panel discussion followed, featuring experts from industry and academia, including Andy Omoro (Samasource Uganda), John Brittell (Side B Partners), Cavendish University Alumni Andrew Dembe (CEO, Mobiklinic), and Dr Kimwise Alone (Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology, CUU). Panelists explored ethical AI operations, workforce development, and the role of universities and industry in shaping Uganda’s AI ecosystem.
The Guest of Honour, Ms Beatrice Nabukenya, Digital Transformation Analyst at The National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U), addressed the audience on AI for Inclusive Growth, highlighting opportunities and responsibilities for Ugandan youth in driving digital transformation. The evening also featured trivia games and interactive sessions, encouraging reflections, Q&A, and active audience engagement.

The event concluded with networking opportunities and exhibitions, connecting participants with CUU staff, alumni, industry partners, and AI experts. Mr David Mutabanura, Executive Director of Cavendish University, delivered the closing remarks, emphasizing next steps for ethical and inclusive AI and pathways for collaboration between CUU, industry, and students.
AI Night at CUU was more than an event; it was a celebration of innovation, knowledge exchange, and the shared vision of an ethically grounded AI future in Uganda.
