Guidelines for Contributors



Cavendish Journal of Social Science and Management is a peer-reviewed journal that is published by Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) on an ongoing/rolling basis. The Mission of the journal is: To broaden access to industry-relevant and scientifically rigorous information on public policy, planning and management issues nationally, regionally and globally, by publishing peer reviewed original articles that will stimulate debate, critical thinking and analysis. This ultimately contributes to improvement in public management.

The Journal is hosted as an electronic source journal on the D-Space of Cavendish University Website -an open access online channel. It can be accessed instantly via Cavendish University Website (www.cavendish.ac.ug) by following the link on Academics and Library and clicking on the D-Link.

Instructions for Authors

Potential authors are encouraged to submit contributions that fall under any of the following six types:

  1. Papers based on sound primary research that is methodologically robust (empirical research papers)
  2. Papers based on secondary data analysis and review of literature and relevant material.
  3. Critical analysis of current or proposed policy measures based on national and international experiences (policy reviews).
  4. Case studies, real life situations and experiences relevant for public policy and management in Uganda in particular and in Africa in general.
  5. Review of relevant books in the field of Social Sciences and Management (book reviews 400 -800)

Below, please find an indicative but non exhaustive list of issues of relevance and interest for the Journal readers. These include:

  1. Public policy relevance and implementation
  2. Public accountability and governance
  3. The role and effectiveness of civil society
  4. Micro and macro-economic policy issues
  5. Globalization and national development
  6. National security, peace and conflict
  7. Legal issues, Professional ethics and professionalism
  8. Community engagement and mobilization
  9. Gender and public policy
  10. Financing options for public services
  11. International and national priority setting
  12. Food security and wellbeing
  13. Environment and sustainable development etc.

Important note for the intending contributors

All articles must be original (no plagiarism or duplication) and should not exceed 6,000 words. They should be double spaced in font size 12 with margins of 3 centimetres all around. They should follow the rule of one space only after all punctuations including full stops and should be in font calibri font, size 12.

Referencing must follow Harvard system: Author and year of publication must be properly cited within the text and reflected in references which must be listed alphabetically at the end of the article.  All references must be complete and accurate and must contain the following details

Journal articles:

  1. Names and initials of authors
  2. Date of Publication
  3. Title of article
  4. Name of Journal
  5. Volume number
  6. Number of first and last page of the quoted article (120-28).

 Books:

  1. Names and initials of authors/editors
  2. Year of Publication
  3. Title of the book
  4. Edition if there is more than one
  5. Name of publishers
  6. Place of publication

 

As a rule, all titles of books and Journals should be italicized bearing in mind other guidelines above. E.g.

  • Akenge N.G. 2009. Gully Erosion in Nigeria Ravaging the South East. Environmental Outreach. Vol.1, No.3. pp 10-16.
  • Dennis, A., Haley Wixom, B., 2000. Systems Analysis and Design: An applied approach. Wiley, New York.

Others

Foot notes are strictly not allowed. Authors must explain what they want to write within the article and take references to the references section. Acronyms must be written in full the first time they are used. Tables and figures must be included only if essential for understanding the text and should not be showing raw data. Authors are not allowed to repeat in text, the data already presented in tables and figures. Every table of figure should have a number and title and should be referred to by the number (e.g. table 3) within the text.

Research papers should have the following sections:

  1. Title (not exceeding 18 words), and below the title, full names of authors, their addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers. The corresponding author should be indicated.
  2. Abstract (summarizing key sections of the papers, especially context, objectives, methods, findings and recommendations).
  3. Introduction and background
  4. Methodology
  5. Findings and analysis
  6. Discussion
  7. Conclusions and recommendations
  8. References

Articles must be submitted in one electronic copy to the Editor in Chief – Cavendish Journal of Social Science and Management at cjssm@cavendish.ac.ug. All Articles will undergo a thorough peer review process before a decision is made on whether to accept or reject it for publication. In all cases the Editor in Chief will take the final decision based on the reports from the peer reviewers. Once the article is uploaded, the author will be notified through the electronic system. All authors must declare ownership of the article and state that the article has not been submitted for review or is not already published in another journal.
