Cavendish University’s ICT Innovators Make Waves on the Global Stage

Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) proudly celebrates its outstanding achievement at the highly competitive 2024–2025 Huawei Global ICT Competition, where a joint team from Cavendish and Gulu universities secured the first runner-up position in the Cloud Track category.

Represented by two talented students, Cavendish University’s Andrew Mulondo, an ICT student, distinguished himself by qualifying for the Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China. His exceptional skills and innovative approach showcased CUU’s commitment to excellence in digital innovation and strengthened the university’s growing reputation on the international stage.

The competition’s results were announced on May 24 during the closing awards gala, marking the grand finale of the event’s 9th edition. This year’s competition was truly global, attracting over 210,000 students and instructors from more than 2,000 institutions across 100 countries and regions. After rigorous national and regional rounds, only 179 teams from 48 countries advanced to the global finals—making the Cavendish team’s performance all the more impressive.

Competing Among the World’s Best

The Huawei Global ICT Competition challenges students in multiple categories, including Network Track, Cloud Track, Computing Track, and the Programming Grand Prize. Cavendish University’s remarkable performance in the Cloud Track placed Uganda alongside top institutions from the Philippines, Algeria, China, and Singapore.

Recognition from National and International Leaders

Uganda’s success was celebrated by Dr. Kedrace Turyagenda, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Sports, who represented the First Lady and Minister of Education, Hon. Janet Museveni. Dr. Turyagenda praised Huawei for its pivotal role in advancing ICT education in Uganda and congratulated Cavendish University for its international success.

“Huawei has helped Uganda make significant strides in ICT, reaching rural communities and empowering university students through innovation competitions,” Dr. Turyagenda said. “We congratulate Gulu, Muni, and Cavendish universities for their outstanding performance internationally, and we applaud all the youth who participated globally.”

Uganda’s Consul General in Guangzhou, Ambassador Judyth Nsababera, also lauded the team and encouraged students to leverage their new skills to address challenges back home. “These students return not only with medals but also with knowledge and inspiration that can transform communities,” she remarked.

The success of CUU’s students exemplifies Cavendish University’s dedication to preparing graduates who are ready to innovate and lead in the digital age. The University remains committed to empowering students to develop technology solutions that address Uganda’s and the world’s most pressing challenges.
