Cavendish University Uganda Wins National Rounds for International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition 2022



CUU emerged winners of the National Inter-University International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Court Competition which was held from 12th – 14th July 2022 at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala. The Moot competition was organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Uganda.

The win qualifies Cavendish University to represent Uganda in the Regional Rounds happening in Arusha later this year.

Cavendish University defeated Gulu University at the finals to emerge this year’s champions.

7 University teams participated in the competition namely; Cavendish University Uganda (CUU), Gulu University, KIU, Uganda Christian University (UCU), Nkumba University, IUIU, and Bishop Stuart University (BSU).

The finals were adjudicated by a high profile team that consisted of prominent judges and top academics including; Justice Mike Chibita, Her Worship Harriet Ssali, Justice Susan Okalany, Dr. Kabumba Busingye, Adv. James Nkuubi and Adv. Jemma Arman.

The winning team comprised of three Cavendish University students namely; Mirriam Lawoko, Mugisha Echo and Ahebwa Rogers Musiime who were awarded a cash prize of UGX 2,100,000 and an award while team Gulu, the runners up received a cash prize of UGX 1,500,000 and an award.

Mirriam Lawoko from Cavendish University Uganda received the Individual Excellence Award which is given to the overall best oralist in the preliminary rounds and CUU also emerged the overall best team in the preliminary rounds.

Special acknowledgement goes out to the CUU team’s coach, Adv. Godfrey Ayeranga, the Faculty Dean, Prof. Olomola Omolade, and faculty staff; Dr. Mugagga Robert, Adv. Herman Tuhairwe, Adv. Mary Nyachieo and Joel Kanyerezi who were very instrumental in preparing the team.

Coach Ayeranga was also assisted by three law students; Lamin Sanyang, Fatou Jaiteh and Atyang Rosette who normally take part in other Moot competitions.
