Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) emerged as the overall winner of the Inaugural International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation in Kampala (ICAMEK) National Arbitration Moot Competition 2025, claiming the top position in a landmark contest that brought together eleven (11) universities from across the country. The competition was held at the International University of East Africa (IUEA) on 27th – 28th November 2025.

In a powerful display of legal intellect, advocacy, and mastery of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), CUU dominated the competition, walking away with three major awards: Overall Best Team, Best Oralist, and Best Respondent Written Memorial. The achievement marks a proud milestone for the University and underlines its growing reputation for excellence in legal education and practical skills training.

The winning CUU team was represented by Oyindamola Abigail and Ishmael Kipkemboi, whose performance stood out before panels of experienced arbitration practitioners. Notably, Oyindamola Abigail was crowned Best Oralist, a testament to her exceptional advocacy skills, clarity of argument, and courtroom presence. In recognition of their excellence, both students were awarded a full scholarship for specialised arbitration training offered by ICAMEK, further strengthening their pathway into alternative dispute resolution practice.

Designed to complement traditional litigation training, the moot equips law students with practical arbitration and mediation skills, exposing them to real-world dispute resolution processes that are increasingly vital in modern legal practice. Participating students prepared and argued mock arbitration cases before seasoned professionals, while also gaining valuable networking opportunities with ADR practitioners.

Founded in 2018, ICAMEK has rapidly established itself as Uganda’s leading arbitration institution, offering mediation, adjudication, and dispute avoidance services. Over the past seven years, the Centre has worked closely with the judiciary, trained hundreds of professionals, and positioned Uganda as an emerging regional hub for alternative dispute resolution.

Cavendish University Uganda’s resounding victory at this inaugural moot not only celebrates individual and team excellence but also reflects the University’s commitment to producing practice-ready graduates who are equipped to address contemporary legal challenges. As Uganda continues to seek innovative solutions to judicial case backlogs, CUU continues to shape future legal professionals at the forefront of arbitration and mediation practice.
