Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) has soared to new heights, securing the prestigious Best Memorial Award at the regional rounds of the 16th Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition, held in Pretoria, South Africa from 22–23 May 2025.
This remarkable achievement is a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication of our Law students: Mirembe Lindah, Kihembo Marysent Abiine, Mugisha Echo, and Rweenema Edgar. Their stellar performance and in-depth legal research set them apart from teams representing 10 leading universities across Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Uganda.
Notably, this regional success follows CUU’s impressive performance at the Uganda National Rounds, where the team emerged as the Second-Best Team and obtained the Best Written Memorials award. These outstanding results secured their qualification for the Regional Rounds in April 2025, paving the way for their continued excellence on the continental stage.
The Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition is a premier event in the field of space law, challenging participants to tackle complex legal issues in outer space, telecommunications, Earth observation, and aerospace law. The Regional rounds were hosted by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), in collaboration with The South African National Space Agency (SANSA).
CUU’s team impressed the judges with their eloquence, analytical depth, and innovative legal arguments, earning them the coveted Best Memorial Award. Their success not only highlights their mastery of international space law but also showcases CUU’s commitment to nurturing future legal leaders equipped to address the evolving challenges of space governance.
This victory places Cavendish University Uganda at the forefront of legal education in Africa, reinforcing the University’s reputation for academic excellence and leadership in emerging fields. As space law continues to shape the future, CUU students are proving that success truly begins at Cavendish.
Congratulations to Strathmore University, Kenya for winning the competition, and heartfelt congratulations to the Cavendish outstanding team and the entire Faculty of Law for this inspiring milestone.
