Cavendish University Uganda mourns the passing of former Chancellor H.E. Dr Kenneth Kaunda

Cavendish University Uganda mourns the loss of its Former Chancellor H.E. Dr Kenneth Kaunda who passed away on Thursday June 17, 2021 in the Zambian capital, Lusaka following a short illness.

He was 97 years old. H.E. Dr Kenneth Kaunda was a former President of the Republic of Zambia, and the Chancellor of Cavendish University Uganda from inception in 2008 until 2014 when he retired and was replaced by H.E. Benjamin Mkapa (former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, also deceased).

As the inaugural Chancellor of Cavendish University Uganda, H.E Kenneth Kaunda fervently inspired and presided over the graduation of thousands of our students, and guided the university in its nascent stages, providing management with strategic advice and enabling the university to gain visibility and establish strong networks which set a solid foundation for the provision of innovative, high-quality, technology-enabled education for which Cavendish University Uganda is well known today.

H.E Kenneth Kaunda was a leading supporter of liberation movements in the Southern Africa region including his own native Republic of Zambia which gained independence from Great Britain in 1964, following which he became independent Zambia’s first president. As head of the United National Independence Party (UNIP), H.E Kaunda then led the country until 1991 when he stepped down after losing multi-party elections in 1991, becoming the first African president to be defeated at the polls and retire gracefully. In retirement, H.E Kaunda worked for many organisations promoting the causes of health and education, notably our own Cavendish University Uganda.

We convey our sincere condolences to the family of H.E. Dr Kenneth Kaunda, the Zambian President H.E Edgar Lungu, the entire Zambian people and the fraternity of Cavendish University Uganda on the loss of a very respected and iconic African. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
