Olympia is an invitational round-robin debate tournament that happens annually and brings together the best speakers and champions from the African region to debate amongst each other. Cavendish has been home to Olympia as it has hosted all the tournaments Olympia has held since 2020.
The tournament took place from Thursday, 16th February to Sunday, 19th February 2023 under the theme, “Achieving Equity, Regional Integration, Tax Justice and Sustainable Development among the Youth,” at the Mestil Hotel & Residences.
Participating Universities included; Cavendish University Uganda (CUU), Makerere University, Strathmore University (Kenya), University of Development Studies (Ghana), Uganda Christian University, Islamic University in Uganda, Nkumba University, Kyambogo University, Victoria University, Kenyatta University and Makerere University Business School.
The CUU team comprised; Abdurazak Muhammad, Emily Owarimpa, and Austin Harris Siima. The Winner of the tournament was the University of Development Studies (Ghana) while the overall best speaker, Kimani Kiragu was from Strathmore University (Kenya).
In attendance was the Dean of Students at Cavendish University Uganda, Mr. Medard Nabaasa who was the day’s Guest of Honour, the Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof. Olomola Omolade and her Deputy, Dr. Chidinma Therese, and the President of the Cavendish Law Society (CLS), Mr Emmanuel Sabwengye, among other invited guests. Organising partners included; Olympia Debate Society Ltd, Seatini Uganda and the Embassy of South Sudan.
