Cavendish University hosts 2022 Olympia Regional Debate Championship



This Year’s Olympia Regional Debate Championship was hosted by Cavendish University Uganda at the Faculty of Law Campus from 3rd to 6th February 2022 under the theme, “Youth as an asset to a meaningful regional integration agenda amidst COVID-19.” This is the second time for the Olympia to be held at CUU, having hosted the first edition in 2020.

Olympia is an exclusive invitational Debate Championship that brings together the annual best speakers in East Africa for a Round Robin Tournament with 5 rounds and the Grand Finale.

The debate attracted participants from Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon, and South Africa. The Chief Adjudicator for the Tournament was Mr. Fanele Mashwama (Harvard University, World Champion 2016 CA, WUDC 2019, SA) who was assisted by other independent adjudicators from South Africa and Cameroon.

Universities that participated included; Cavendish University Uganda, Kyambogo University, Gulu University, Uganda Christian University, Mukono, Makerere University, Strathmore University, University of Nairobi, Nkumba University, African Leadership University, Royalty Pact Debating Academy, and the United States International University, Africa.

The Guest of Honour at the Grand Finale was Rt Hon. Rebbeca Kadaga who was ably represented by the Hon. Richard Sebamala, the MP for Bukoto Central in Uganda’s Parliament.

The Debate champions were Tshepiso Masilonyane and Eugine Kwizera from African Leadership University, Rwanda and the Best Speaker was Njuguna Macharia from Strathmore University, Kenya. Cavendish University was proficiently represented by Siime Austin and Collins Mbulakyalo.
